have the ability for users to be able to choose the group they want to be in (from a list of groups that admin permits to be joined), and also the user can change their group anytime by updating their profile

Not sure about this one as this will bring more modifications on the various group mods...
We'll see...
Having new member signing up to groups made available by the administration seems like a great idea. Many people are looking to sell subscriptions and this seems like a move in the right direction.
That would make changing groups in the user profile not such a good idea unless it would have to be approved by the admin.
