The pnGroups is a fork taking its source in both the pnGroups 0.1 from Michael D. Halbrook and the pncGroups from me. Michael's pnGroups was in pnHTML and mine was in plain old basic php. (The fork decision was taken by Michael and me after discussing what we would do with our modules aiming at the same goal).

The new pnGroups 2.0 is now pnRender-pnAPI and ... 0.760 required.

The reason behind the 0.760 requirement is that some features were planned and/or wanted to be part of the Groups management inside the official PostNuke Package. To make it possible or easier for the future, almost no functions already available in the 0.760 Groups module were repeated in the pnGroups. That way, most of the pnGroups code can be added "as is" with limited renaming and modifications.

The other reason (related to the first one) was because the Groups management in PostNuke 0.75x and below wasn't in the latest standards brought by the 0.76x codebase. Now that it is, the pnGroups can use some features already available in the Groups management without duplicating them in the pnGroups module.
