Wakka Wiki

WikkaWiki builds on code from WakkaWiki, adding numerous features and fixes.

Some history
WakkaWiki is a legendary wiki engine, written in PHP with a MySQL backend. Developed by Carlos Zottman and Hendrik Mans, it rapidly grew into one of the most popular CMS for small intranets and collaborative projects, thanks to its lightweightness and its easily hackable code.

Death and rebirth of a wiki engine
In 2003, the development of Wakka Wiki came abruptly to an end, although a large community of contributors was still actively posting bugfixes, extensions and new functionalities. Lacking further maintainance, Wakka ceased being attractive to new users and saw most of its contributors migrate to one of its many forks. Today, WakkaWiki survives in a number of forks, sharing the same ancestry but pursuing their own visions. It is for this reason that WakkaWiki was nominated as one of the best wiki engines ever (see the WikiEngineHallOfFame).
As of September 2004 the original WakkaWiki domain appears to be defunct. The original WakkaWiki site (whose latest version is still archived on the WayBack Machine) has been resurrected at the domain wakkawiki.de and is now seeing some updates. (For the historians under us, the WayBack Machine archive may be more reliable though.)

WikkaWiki
First released in May 2004, WikkaWiki has grown into a mature project aiming to remain faithful to Wakka's heritage of a lightweight engine with readable and accessible code. Easy extensibility/hackability (without sacrificing performance) are among Wikka's most prominent and appreciated features.

pnWikka
The first goal of the pnWikka was to easily integrate the Wikka wiki engine as a 3rd party module for PostNuke (PostNuke Content Management System). Unfortunatly, as powerful as the Wikka wiki engine was, the PostNuke core system had technologies that didn't fit very well with the directions and the current state of the Wikka wiki engine code.

The choice was then made to completly rewrite the Wikka wiki engine and all related features (actions, handlers, etc) to follow the PostNuke guidelines. Although this qualifies the pnWikka as a "fork", the spirit is the same and all credits for the content of this actual wiki are to be given to the WikkaWiki authors and contributers.

The final results :
~- PostNuke guidelines
~~- PostNuke API Compliant
~~- Using Database ADODB Abstraction class (DBUtil coming soon)
~~- Using Smarty pnRender? templating Engine
~~- Using PostNuke Security
~~- Multilingual (Using PostNuke language settings and laguage definition files)
~~- Etc...
